I’m studying in a city that’s famous for its walls. People who visit my city are amazed at the imposing sight of its walls, especially when silhouetted against the setting sun with gold, shining streaks. The old, cracked bricks are covered with lichens and the walls are weather-beaten guards standing still for centuries.
Our ancestors liked to build walls. They built walls in Beijing, Xi’an, Nanjing and many other cities, and they built the Great Wall, which snakes across half our country. They built walls to protect against enemies and evil spirits. This tradition has survived to this day: we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public.
For a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world to me.
My perceptions, however, changed after I made a hiking trip to the eastern suburbs of my city. My classmates and I were walking with some foreign students. As we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by tall trees, which formed a wide canopy above our heads. Suddenly one foreign student asked me, “Where is the entrance to the eastern suburbs?”
“We’re already in the eastern suburbs,” I replied. He seemed taken aback, “I thought you Chinese had walls for everything.” His remark set off a heated debate. At one point, he likened our walled cities to “jails”， while I insisted that the eastern suburbs were one of the many places in China that had no walls.
That debate had no winners, but I did learn a lot from this student. For instance, he told me that some major universities like Oxford and Cambridge were not surrounded by walls. I have to admit that we do have many walls in China, and as we develop our country, we must look carefully at them and decide whether they are physical or intangible. We will keep some walls but tear down those that impede our development.
Let me give another example.
A year ago, when I was working on a term paper, I needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library. However, the librarian coldly rejected my request to borrow it, saying, “You can’t borrow this book, you’re not a student here.” In the end, I had to spend 200 yuan to buy a copy. Meanwhile, the copy in the law school gathered dust on the shelf.
At the beginning of this semester, I heard that my university had started to think of unifying its libraries and linking them to libraries at other universities, so my experience wouldn’t be repeated. Barriers would be replaced by bridges. An inter-library loan system would give us access to books from any library. With globalization and China integrated into the world, I believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.
I know that globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. But one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to China’s tangible and intangible walls and forces us to examine their role in the modern world.
And how about the ancient walls of mine and other cities? Should we tear them down? Definitely not. My city, like Beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls. These walls attract historians, archaeologists, and many schoolchildren who are trying to study our history and cultural heritage. Walls have become bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. If the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great changes in the role of their walls. They are now bridges that link East and West, South and North, and all countries of the world. Our cultural heritage will survive globalization.
as we know, you have to learn how to fly much more independently instead of under your parents’ considerate protection when you get into college, which also means you will come across enormous questions that should be solved by yourself. from my point of view, those main problems can fall into three parts.
first of all, the complicated relationship. for one thing, you have to know how cultural differences function in your relationship and respect them. in addition, college students spend less time studying together owing to different courses’ choosing, which requires us to devote more energy to building relationship. for the other thing, it is also vital to communicate with your parents often by using mobile phones or other tools.

My Attitude towards to Marks 我的分数观
For our students， marks is above everything. Teachers will judge us from our marks. With marks we can be enrolled into junior middle schools. With marks， we can be enrolled into senior middle schools. With marks we can be enrolled into college. With marks we can be enrolled into postgraduate and doctrine studies. Still with marks we can be graded and be allowed to go abroad for further studies. Our parents will be strict with us with the marks. Our society judge us from marks. However， sometimes we students compare one another with marks directly. We are completely controlled by marks. We like them and we feel sorry for them. But what attitude towards our marks should we take？
Truly， marks functions cannot be underestimated. In terms of test in our study， marks are fair and real. That is the reason why we say ＂Everyone is equal before marks. ＂
However， I think marks are the sole standard to judge the success or failure of students in exams. Sometimes， marks more than ten or less than one or two in our exams comparing with others mean not everything. The success or failure in exams will be influenced by experience on the spot and the examinee’s health etc. Once in a while one cannot fail in exams. ＂ Success or failure is common sense for military. ＂ I think everyone is familiar with the famous saying. Don’t you think such will be the case with our study？ In exams， one cannot be ＂ never-defeated general＂ . Even though one will be very good in everyday study， he cannot succeed in every exam sometimes. We can get proof from the fact that the very best one we call ＂Number One Scholar＂ in the entrance exams for college and ordinary middle school and specialized secondary school over the years is not eminent above all others nor top student in every study.
As a matter of fact， ＂high marks＂ and ＂ability＂ are not unified. Some time ago， a new phrase ＂ high marks but poor competence＂ came into being. Once I happened to meet such a teacher as this is said that the teacher just graduated from a far-famed key university. But his teaching result is much less than that of the one who just graduated from a not-well-renowned college. When lecturing， the teacher only repeated what the text-books says， which was very dull so the his students’ interest in learning was not aroused. His teaching was short of unity of teaching and learning. At present there is a fact that we know a few brilliant and top college graduates are not qualified for their posts. The reason for it may be lack of the ability to combine knowledge learnt from books with pragmatics in their work. Students of this kind will be successful in every exam but they will be able to use freely their knowledge in their posts. Don’t you think it waste training such persons for the country？
To sum up from the above， I can say marks are not absolutely authoritative for some. If we neglect training and developing the students’ ability and competence and if we only seek for the high marks， we will be absolutely wrong. We should take an objective attitude towards the marks. Neither should we neglect them nor should we overvalue them like a God.

However, we can hardly see ourselves in aps sometimes we can, but only as a colourless face. Technology has broughtgreat convenience of communication for information but at the same time, it haswebbed our thought.
Several years ago, an article named “Is Google making us stupid” got quitepopular on the Internet. At that time, I thought it was just alarmism but now Ifind it much worse because technology is not just making us stupid but alsoweakening our independent thought. About half year ago, I was invited to judge adebate competition. When I arrived at the competition room, I noticed it was anold and classic topic, so I was expecting those players to give me some new andspecial ideas. Unfortunately, when the game continued, I found all theviewpoints and examples they used were totally the same as the previouscompetition. The only fun during the competition was to predict what they wouldsay. As far as I was concerned, they were not making a debate but replaying avideo. Obviously, they just spoke for the black mirror.
Debate was born as an area that we use our own thought to defend ouropinion. However due to high technology, all these "My opinion is" in thecompetition are actually "The opinion I have found is". That is , really, atragedy because all human dignity lies in thought which has been weakened byconvenient technology.

What is a great book? There is no end to the making of books. Nor doesthere seem to be any end to the making lists of great books. There has always bemore books than one could read. You can be happy at the fact that the number ofthat is relatively small.
However,today,people usually leave it in the library. According to thenational reading survey issued by The China Academy of Press and Publication, in20__, only 55% Chinese aged between18 and 70 book read books is to say,there are more than forty percent of the people seldom read in China.
It is a great challenge to literature. As a educated student,have youinsist on reading great books. In order to change the situation ,we must takeactions to read great books.
In Adler’s essay of What is A Great Book, he explain why we should readgreat books. I conclude it as follows.

Second ,great books are always contemporary,in contrast to the books wecalled contemporary,because they are currently popular ,last for a year ortow,or ten at most. You may probably can not recall the names of many earlierbest sellers,and you may probably would not be interest in reading them. But thegreat are never out modeled by the movement of thought or the shifting winds ofopinion .
Third ,great books are the most instructive. This follows the fact thatthey are original communications. They contain what cannot be found in otherbooks. She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddled their babies.
Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs. Diana Fossey, who spent most of her lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.
To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our eco-environment.
Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. And so when I moved to New York City after college and got completely sucker-punched in the face by depression, I did the only thing I could think of at the time. I wrote those same kinds of letters that my mother had written me for strangers, and tucked them all throughout the city, dozens and dozens of them. I left them everywhere, in cafes and in libraries, at the U.N., everywhere. I blogged about those letters and the days when they were necessary, and I posed a kind of crazy promise to the Internet: that if you asked me for a hand-written letter, I would write you one, no questions asked. Overnight, my inbox morphed into this harbor of heartbreak -- a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied in rural Kansas, all asking me, a 22-year-old girl who barely even knew her own coffee order, to write them a love letter and give them a reason to wait by the mailbox.
Well, today I fuel a global organization that is fueled by those trips to the mailbox, fueled by the ways in which we can harness social media like never before to write and mail strangers letters when they need them most, but most of all, fueled by crates of mail like this one, my trusty mail crate, filled with the scriptings of ordinary people, strangers writing letters to other strangers not because they're ever going to meet and laugh over a cup of coffee, but because they have found one another by way of letter-writing.
But, you know, the thing that always gets me about these letters is that most of them have been written by people that have never known themselves loved on a piece of paper. They could not tell you about the ink of their own love letters. They're the ones from my generation, the ones of us that have grown up into a world where everything is paperless, and where some of our best conversations have happened upon a screen. We have learned to diary our pain onto Facebook, and we speak swiftly in 140 characters or less.
But what if it's not about efficiency this time? I was on the subway yesterday with this mail crate, which is a conversation starter, let me tell you. If you ever need one, just carry one of these. (Laughter) And a man just stared at me, and he was like, "Well, why don't you use the Internet?" And I thought, "Well, sir, I am not a strategist, nor am I specialist. I am merely a storyteller." Well, tonight he sleeps safely with a stack of letters just like this one tucked beneath his pillow, scripted by strangers who were there for him when.
These are the kinds of stories that convinced me that letter-writing will never again need to flip back her hair and talk about efficiency, because she is an art form now, all the parts of her, the signing, the scripting, the mailing, the doodles in the margins. We still clutch close these letters to our chest, to the words that speak louder than loud, when we turn pages into palettes to say the things that we have needed to say, the words that we have needed to write, to sisters and brothers and even to strangers, for far too long. hello! my dear friends !do you like reading books? i guess all of you willsay yes. am i right? thanks to books, we have got a lot of knowledge. on theother hand, tv is another way of getting knowledge. i still remember: last year,i watched an exciting speech on tv. it was given by american president obama, icould feel his great charm. i admire him. yeah, at that time i made a decision:i try to learn english well and some day i can have a talk with him. however,it’s a pity that my english is not so perfect. what can i do? how can i do it?ah, so much to learn. don’ t lose heart! just do it! i say to myself aloud. ifyou set up your mind to learn it, you will get much knowledge. i am sure youwill achieve your goal.
ok! so much knowledge for us to learn. we should do our best to learn must try our best to learn it as much as possible. because knowledge can makeus be learned and wise; because knowledge can make our country develop veryfast; because knowledge can make our world be in harmony. ok! let’s keeptrying!
as you know, now i am a junior high school student. my school life is verywonderful and there are so many interesting subjects for us to learn, such aschinese, english, maths, history, and so on. ok, let me tell you something aboutmy school life. i hope you will enjoy it. in my chinese lesson, i can recite theold wise sayings: “ isn’t it a pleasure that friends come to see you from faraway?” “ what you know, you know; what you don’t know, you don’t know.” thesewords are so educational. meanwhile, i like english very much. in my englishclass, i try to practice my oral english. ok, i have a dream that some day i cantravel around the world and make many foreign friends. all right! historylessons bring us much enjoyment, and i can have a talk with the great people inhistory, such as conficius, qinshihuang, yat-sen, and so on.
