课题研究现状：
委婉语是人类使用语言过程中的一种普遍现象，是人们谈论那些令人不快或尴尬的事情时所使用的较为礼貌的说法。它不仅是一种社会语言现象，更是一种文化现象。随着社会的进步，人类文明的发展，委婉语始终伴随着整个社会的言语交际过程，表现出极强的言语交际功能。
早在16世纪80年代初，英国作家George Blunt首创了Euphemism一词，并将其定义为“a good or favorable interpretation of a bad word ”。此后，美国语言学家Menken结合美国社会的历史文化背景，讨论了几百个英语委婉语产生和流行的原因。英国语言学家Hugh Rawson编纂出版的A Dictionary of Euphemisms and Other Doubletalk(1981)追溯了委婉语的研究历史，而且对委婉语的特点，定义，分类，涉及范围等诸多问题进行了广泛的讨论。英国语言学家利奇在《语用学原则》(Leech，1983)一书中提出了礼貌原则作为委婉语使用原则，还包括得体，宽容，表扬，谦逊，同意，同情六条准则。
20世纪70至80年代，国外社会语言学理论传入我国。委婉语的特殊社会功能受到了一些从事社会语言学研究的学者的兴趣。陈原在《社会语言学》(陈原，1983)一书中辟专章探讨委婉语，是当时国内最为详尽地讨论委婉语现象的著作。陈原不但讨论了委婉语产生的深刻历史和社会心理背景，揭示了委婉语现象的社会本质，还从大量的委婉语现象入手，分析了委婉语构成的特点和使用特点，对委婉语研究有着重要的参考价值。此后十多年里，我国外语界部分学者受国外委婉语研究的启发，陆续发表了一些论文。伍铁平(1989)从模糊理论的角度揭示了委婉语构成的一个重要特征―模糊性，从而为运用现代语言学理论解释委婉语现象提供了一个范例。此后《委婉语新探》(束定芳，1999)进一步运用语用学理论，比较全面的论述了委婉语所涉及的一些理论问题。
进入21世纪后，国内学者对英语委婉语的研究范围更加广泛。有很多学者都分析了英语委婉语的社会功能、特征、构成方式。王小平，胡海兰(2000)从语用学的角度对英语委婉语的产生原因及使用进行论述，并探讨了委婉语语言的间接性与礼貌原则的关系。魏月红(2019)将认知、社会和文化因素结合起来研究语用学，试图从语用综观的角度对委婉语进行研究。方平(2019)从语言文化因素角度对委婉语加以分析，说明委婉语的积极和消极两方面的社会功能，并指出这些功能受语言文化因素的制约。谈媛(2019)应用皮氏符号学理论对英语委婉语的产生和发展进行了分析。从皮氏符号学的角度分析英语委婉语,是从一个新的视角理解委婉语,同时也是对皮氏符号学理论的实践。
综上所述，近年来国内外学者对委婉语的研究纬度很多，有很多学者都分析了委婉语的社会功能、特征和构成方式，从语言学，语义学和修辞学等方面对委婉语进行研究，并且都已取得重要的研究成果。然而，关于从语用功能来探讨委婉语的研究不多，英汉委婉语构成方式对比研究也不足，所以本文将着重研究英汉委婉语构成方式和语用功能对比。
课题研究目的：
本文通过对英汉委婉语构成方式和语用功能的对比，旨在分析英汉委婉语的异同之处，加深对委婉语的了解，以便更好的使用委婉语，为日常生活带来更多便利。由于委婉语在英语中应用比较广泛，所以了解委婉语的交际功能对于我们学好英语，进行有效的跨文化交际有很大的帮助。英汉委婉语有相似之处，更有相异之处。委婉语的对比研究除了可揭示其普遍性和特殊性外,对外语教学、翻译和其它应用语言学科也具有积极的指导意义。

菲茨杰拉德是美国文学史上公认的“迷惘的一代”作家的代言人，他塑造的人物形象是一批年轻男女追求梦想的战争，但他们与作者的生活经历和精神方面的关系密切。从这些内在的关系，我们可以从菲茨杰拉德的理想的“美国梦”的追求的梦想破灭的过程，所谓的“美国梦”是一种信仰，也是一种欲望，一种梦幻般的，在这片充满机会和财富的土地上，人们只要遵循一系列的明确的标准，都有理由获得物质上的成功，这类行为在第十八世纪，体现在富兰克林，杰佛逊，爱迪生的言行。他的杰作，“了不起的盖茨比”，因其巧妙的情节曲折，细腻、优美的语言在文学史上据有一席之地。
(1) Purpose of the research:
The purpose of this study is based on the systematic analysis of different and typical male images in 'The Great Gatsby', . With combination of communication, sociology and ethics and other content, analysis the male image of the background . Through the analysis of 'The Great Gatsby', we can explore the male fate in this novel whether has a certain value orientation, develop a broader space and may of monographic study of male images.
(2) Significance of the research:
Fitzgerald is a 20th century American literature recognized 'Lost Generation' writers spokesperson, he shaped the characters are a group of mostly young men and women after the war to pursue a dream, but they are life experiences and spiritual aspects closely with the author internal relations.
