Good morning India!
Today on 15th August 20xx India is celebrating its 67th Independence Day, and we Indians are proud to say we have owned our freedom 67 years old back. As we gather here today I take the opportunity to congratulate every student and teacher of this School/college a Happy Independence Day! I also take the opportunity of welcoming you our chief guest for today!
We have assembled here to celebrate our 67th Independence Day. As a citizen of India, I am so proud to talk to you about my mother India. On the night of August 14, 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru rose to make a maiden speech in New Delhi, “When the world sleeps, India will wake to life and freedom.” Yes, India became free from the bondage of British rule. Now, India is the largest democratic country in the world. The country’s strength is to find, “Unity in diversity”. But, there are stray incidents that test her secularism but the people of India are ready to sacrifice anything for the cause of unity. Today we remember the great leaders who gave their lives for the nation’s freedom and prosperity. Dr. dkar gave the longest written constitution to us. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru worked for an industrialized India. Gandhi Ji taught us Ahimsa and Non-violence. Subash Chandra Bose inducted courage in us. Swami Vivekanand gave us spiritual power. Yes, with these contributions; India will be the super power in the coming years. Our former President Abdul Kalam called the children of India to dream to build a strong Nation with aim and perseverance. Indeed! This is not a word of a single man. It is word of one billionsouls.

What life is about
As we all know, the most important thing in life is our attitude towards it, tons of men have tried different ways of treating life, and some succeeded, some failed, and here are some of the tips they left us.
Life isn’t about keeping score. Life isn’t about your shoes or your hair or the color of your skin. In fact it’s not about if you have lots of friends or if you are alone, and it’s not about how accepted or unaccepted you are. Life just isn’t about that.
But life is about whom you love and who you hurt. It’s about how you feel about yourself. It’s about trust, happiness and compassion. It’s about sticking up for your friends and replacing inner hate with love. Life is about avoiding jealousy, overcoming ignorance and building confidence. It’s about what you say and what you mean. It’s about seeing people for who they are and not what they have. And we should always remember to be ourselves. Other might have things that we desire but being what we really are is the only trail leading to the true colors of life. Most of all, it’s about choosing to use your life to touch someone else’s in a way that could have never been achieved otherwise.
The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers; we buy more but enjoy them less. We’ve learnt how to make a living but not a life, we’ve added years to life, but not life to years. And it is time for us to choose whether to make a difference in our life.
And these choices are what life is about.

众所周知，关于生活最重要的我们对待生活的态度，不同的人以不同的方式对待生活，一些人成功了，一些人失败了。这里有一些关于生活的帖士给我们大家。
生活不是为了保持高分，生活也不仅仅是你的鞋子、你的发型和你的肤色。实际上，生活也不只是你拥有多少朋友，或者你是否孤独;生活也不仅仅意味着你被别人接受与否。生活并不仅仅是这些。
但是，生活是关于你所爱的和你所伤害的那些人。生活就是你对自己的所有感觉。它是关于信任、幸福和包容。它是你对朋友的支持和如何用爱来融化内心的憎恨。生活就是远离嫉妒、克服无知和建立信心。生活是关于你的言行和思想。

in our daily lives, we have many choices to make, such as what to eat for supper,what clothes to wear, or what to do on weekends. at certain times in our lives, we need to make even more critical choices, such as which school to attend, what job to take or who to choose as husband or wife. yes, life is a matter of choice. seemimgly, it means a choice of tangible things. but in essence, it means choosing a way of life. life is to be lived, savored, and enjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.
hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the grave threat from the life-and-death disease--sars. yet, even during those dreadful times, some afflicted people remained optimistic. instead of wearing neutral white masks, some people turned to colouful ones, and thus display a happy mood. and some creative people dubbed sars to mean "smile and remain smiling." i was deeply touched by their optimisim, nearly forgetting that we're still in a battle. people who survive these kinds of circumstances, (at some point)decide in their minds to carry on in spite of the overwhelming odds.
laid-off workers, typically regarded as the victims of economic advancement, are subject to desperation that being unmeployed has brought on them. but, encouragingly, we have witnessed some of them striving hard to rebuild confidence toward life and discover new opportunities for demonstrating their values.
although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoid unexpected disasters and adversities, we do have the privilege to choose to live optimistcally,to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.
every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approach life that day. as for me, i choose to be cheerful.
日常生活中,我们会面临各种各样的选择,像是晚餐吃什么,穿什么或是如何度周末。而在人生中的特定阶段,我们需要做出更多关键性的抉择,例如教育,职业或者人生伴侣。生活就意味着一种选择。这种选择看似是对具体事物的判断,但归根究底,是一种生活方式的选择。任何无味的抱怨和虚度光阴只会带来乏味,生活的美需要细心品尝,用心体会。
如今回想起那段笼罩在sars阴影下的日子依然心有余悸。但即便在那样令人沮丧的日子里,备受折磨的人们也始终保持着乐观。为传递一种欢快的情绪,大家换上了色彩缤纷的口罩。而那些富有创造力的人则把sars解释为"笑口常开"。他们对待生活的乐观态度深深打动了我,几乎让我忘记我们还身处在没有硝烟的战场。其实,正是坚持不懈,坚忍不拔的精神引领人们走出了逆境。
被看做经济发展牺牲品的广大下岗职工在面对生存压力时,特别容易陷入绝望当中。但别人欣慰的是,我们看到越来越多的这个群体中的成员重建了对生活的信心,并重新立足于社会以实现自己的价值。
尽管容貌和天资都是上苍给予,而人生旅途中的坎坷与荆棘我们也无法预计,那就让我们热爱生命,拥有梦想,珍惜希望吧。
每日清晨梦醒,我们都被赋予了选择生活的权利。而我会让一切从愉快开始。
but here's the thing about my grandfather. underneath this ceremonial role, he was really modest and really introverted -- so much so that when he delivered these sermons, he had trouble making eye contact with the very same congregation that he had been speaking to for 62 years. and even away from the podium, when you called him to say hello, he would often end the conversation prematurely for fear that he was taking up too much of your time. but when he died at the age of 94, the police had to close down the streets of his neighborhood to accommodate the crowd of people who came out to mourn him. and so these days i try to learn from my grandfather's example in my own way.
so i just published a book about introversion, and it took me about seven years to write. and for me, that seven years was like total bliss, because i was reading, i was writing, i was thinking, i was researching. it was my version of my grandfather's hours of the day alone in his library. but now all of a sudden my job is very different, and my job is to be out here talking about it, talking about introversion. (laughter) and that's a lot harder for me, because as honored as i am to be here with all of you right now, this is not my natural milieu.
so i prepared for moments like these as best i could. i spent the last year practicing public speaking every chance i could get. and i call this my “year of speaking dangerously.“ (laughter) and that actually helped a lot. but i'll tell you, what helps even more is my sense, my belief, my hope that when it comes to our attitudes to introversion and to quiet and to solitude, we truly are poised on the brink on dramatic change. i mean, we are. and so i am going to leave you now with three calls for action for those who share this vision.
No thought exactly, exactly when to start, has set foot on the road of youth, young no longer time, started the different thoughts and mood. More moment of time, water out eventually must stop, forever all, no longer believe that anything is immortal.
For a long time, we are always in the wandering and hesitation, the fork in the road of life, can not find the way forward, have no one to give you direction, pain, sorrow, to follow. We sighed with emotion, always feel that, because of youth, life becomes muddy; Because of the youth, we become decadent disconsolate. Because of the youth, we couldn't see the future.
However, should not is the youth.
Youth is the pronoun of surging blood, is permeated with enthusiasm, is hard work, try is endless. Youth is amenable to hone but can't afford to spend, withstand development but can't afford to waste. All day long malaise, the eyes see is decadent, what's the point? More complaints, discontent, and can change what? Just can make oneself feel living very tired very heavy, and then again the complaints, discontent, so, a vicious cycle.
In fact, we are young, what is impossible! Had so many dreams, is this in this great good youth, to strive, to strive, to an opportunity to achieve all you want. As long as bravely forward, efforts to pay, even if to finally failed to gain what you want, in the process of experience have you enough to treasure memories.
Youth, give you, my life only once, prime not heavy, once a day morning, when encouraged in time, time and tide wait for no man. Is most worthy of being highly treasure the value of each and every day, grasp today, grasp tomorrow, welcome the first ray of sunshine every day. Youth time is priceless, every minute counts.
Most of the time will feel tired, helpless, not a lot of passion. Whether because our heart is no longer young, everything is see through? No, dominate the world is you, give up the world is still you. Haze weather mood diary or beautiful, are you in writing.
Perhaps, in this materialistic, false prosperity of society, do you want to just flatly light life, "otherwise, serene life", do not want to pursue in the repeated, do an ordinary person. We can't go too one-sided evaluation says this is right or wrong, but ordinary doesn't mean mediocrity. We can be ordinary, but can not mediocrity.
Once, many years later, when to do, say, always feel that is so childish. Young ignorance, is the young dream, the wasted years filled with youthful dribs and drabs. May be sad, may be sad. Want to say is, do not experience wind and rain, how see rainbow; Want to say is, don't give up, want to stay more has also is the scenery along the way. Want to say is, no matter what, all is the past, no need to go to with grief.
One day we will enter the adult, in the way of youth away. But please don't be sad, because leave is for better memories. 没有确切地想过，到底是从何时开始，就已经踏上了青春的道路，年少的时光不再，开始了另一番的思想与心境。更多地须臾长叹：细水长流终须止，天长地久有尽时，不再相信有什么东西是永垂不朽的。
很长的一段时间，我们总是在徘徊、彷徨，人生的岔路口上，找不到前进的道路，没有能够给予你指导方向的人，痛苦、忧伤接踵而至。我们感叹着，总觉得，因为青春，生活变得泥泞不堪;因为青春，我们变得颓废惘然;因为青春，我们看不清未来。
可是，青春并不应该是这些的。
青春的代名词是澎湃的热血，是洋溢的热情，是努力的拼搏，是无尽的尝试。青春是经得起磨练但经不起消磨的，经得起开发却经不起挥霍。整日的萎靡不振，眼里看见的只是颓废，这些又有什么意义呢?再多的抱怨，再多的不满，又能够改变什么呢?只是会让自己觉得活的很累很沉重，然后再次的抱怨、不满，如此下去，恶性循环罢了。
其实，我们还年轻，有什么事情是不可能的!曾经那么多的梦想，正该乘着这大好的青春年华，去拼搏、去努力，给所有的梦想一次实现的机会。只要勇敢得向前，努力的付出，即使到最后没能够收获你想要的，过程中的经历也已经足够你去珍藏回忆的。
青春，只赋予你、我一生一次，盛年不重来，一日难再晨，及时当勉励，岁月不待人。最值得高度珍惜的莫过于每一天的价值，把握住今天把握住明天，迎来每天的第一缕阳光。青春时光无价，一刻千金。
很多时候都会觉得疲惫不堪、无可奈何，没有太多的激情。是否是因为我们的心已经不再年轻了，将一切都已经看透?不，主宰世界的是你，放弃世界的仍然是你。心情日记里天气的阴霾或风和日丽，其实都是你自己在撰写。
或许，在这物欲横流，虚假繁荣的社会里，你想要的只是平平淡淡的生活，“与世无争，恬淡一生”，不想在反反复复中追寻，只做一个平凡的人。我们不能过于片面的去评价说这是对是错，但是平凡并不意味着平庸。我们可以平凡，但绝不可以平庸。
很多年以后，回想起曾经做的事、说过的话，总会觉得是那么的幼稚。年幼的无知，少年的白日梦，蹉跎的岁月中充斥着青春的点点滴滴。或许会悲伤，或许会难过。想说的是，不经历风雨，怎能看见彩虹;想说的是，再多的不舍、留恋也已经是沿途的风景;想说的是，无论是什么，都已经是过去的了，没有必要再去纠结哀伤。
终有一天我们将会进入成年,在青春的路上渐行渐远。但请不要悲伤,因为离开是为了更好的回忆。有人曾说过“人生就像一张有去无回的单程车票，没有彩排，每一场都是现场直播。把握好每次演出便是对人生最好的珍惜。”当我们再次回首往事时，可以很自豪地说：当我们年轻时，我们奋斗过，尽情燃烧过。可以无悔地面对自己，面对未来，不曾有过遗憾!

psychologist tell us that stress is a state of worry caused by the problem of living , such as too much work or study , heavy responsibilities , and quickened pace of life .
statistics show that stress comes from every detail in our life . financial problems , poor health , being laid off may be the stress that most adults now suffering . as students in the university , we are also under our special stress . while study , having to take various tests and submit a project against a deadline may put a great pressure on us . and the things make us felt stressed may be our parents’s greater expectations on us than we could reach . later , when we are likely to graduate , some other problems will also annoy us . i think we will worry a lot about our ability to compete in the job market and how we can best use what we’ve learned at college in our future job .

We cannot lose innovation
There is a wonderful word which expresses the most original motions and desires among human-beings. With solving any kind of imperfections, our world has moved ahead. This is the word “innovation” that we cannot afford to lose.
We chicaned every detail of the innovation. Thousands years before, we created fire when we took a stone to knock another one. Since Han Dynasty, four great inventions had been created and it is one of the greatest signs that China become to the ancient civilized country. And nowadays, thousands of software, products, architectures and public facilities have upgraded more than that about 100 years ago. So how did these happen? What will you do if you are not satisfied with your tools anymore? What will you do if old mode cannot afford to develop in a company? There is no doubt that we should innovate no matter where we are and what we do. Not because of the design itself, but actually for its intended purpose.
If there was no Apple, everyone could not imagine how to contact others easily and enjoy a better Internet surfing.
If there was no Microsoft, perhaps we still worked in a dim office and duplicate some troublesome documents. If there was no Newton, and no theory of gravity, maybe I will win the Nobel Prize like Newton rather than just standing here. I have heard that three apple changed the world. The first one seduced Eve. The second one awakened Newton. The third one was in the hands of Steve Jobs. We sort of think the innovation of the world began with apple. I imagine lots of people want to become another Newton or Jobs right now with just one hand to change the world, right? Have the innovation to follow your heart. It somehow already reflects what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
Via questioning, we can start to innovate. Via innovating, we can start to create better lives. No innovation, no improvement. No improvement, no success. And no success, no civilization. Now, our time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life! Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice! Don't let yourself down! It is the innovation that we cannot afford to lose!

我们的每一个细节的创新诡计。几千年前，我们用石头打另一个火，我们生火。自汉代以来，四大发明创造出来，是中国古代文明的伟大标志之一。而如今，数以千计的软件、产品、建筑和公共设施已经超过120xx年前的升级了。那么这些是怎么发生的呢?如果你不满意你的工具，你会怎么做?如果老模式不能在一个公司中发展，你会做什么?毫无疑问，无论我们在哪里，我们做什么，我们都要创新。不是因为设计本身，而是为了它的目的。

Hello everyone! My name is Wei Xiuying. I’m a student from Zhen’an Middle School. I’m from Class 3 Grade 8. I’m shy but there is always a smile on my face. At school, I have some good habits. For example, I read books every day, I often play sports. My favorite sport is ping-pong. Because I really like Ding Ning. She can play it very well. I often play it with my classmates at school in the afternoon. It is interesting.
Our school is very nice. First, there is a beautiful garden in our school. It has a lot of flowers and trees. The flowers are colorful and smell good. The trees are green and you can have a rest under the tree. Second, there is a big playground in our school too. We can play basketball, play badminton, run and so on. It is healthy for our mind and body to play sports. Third, there is also a dining hall in our school. We can have meals there and the food tastes delicious. The teachers are very friendly to us. They usually help with our study. Although they sometimes are strict, they just want us to get good grades. I love my classmates too. Because they can make me laugh and I can learn a lot from them. Dear friends! Do you still remember your first English teacher? You may say:” Yes.” Everyone has his teachers, in my mind, I’ll never forget her---my first English teacher Ms. Li. Without her, I wouldn’t be standing here. She is a young and lovely lady with beautiful eyes. Her voice sounds sweet and she speaks English very well. That was the first impression she left on us when she first gave us an English lesson.
In her class, she taught us carefully and patiently. she has a strange way of making her class lively and interesting. She always made opportunities for us to speak English. She gave us many beautiful pictures to talk on them, played games with us and told us many interesting stories. She made us learn from games. We learned English with great fun. After class she helped the students who had trouble in learning English.
Little by little, I had interest in English, but English was a new subject to me, I had many difficulties in learning it well. I often felt very confused. Even though I wanted to give up learning English. It was Ms. Li who helped me to find ways to overcome my difficulties. She helped me to practice speaking English everyday. She always encouraged me whenever I lost heart. She helped me to have confidence in myself. She gave me what I needed, courage, confidence, good ways to learn
English and opportunities to speak English in class. So I was grateful for her. Maybe I can’t meet her again. The only thing I can give her is my best wishes. I wish my dear teacher happiness, good health and good luck. And I also want to say to her: Thank you, Ms. Li. I love you!

Withtechnology developing at a rocket speed, the black mirror is everywhere, on thescreens of our cellphones, our computers and our televisions. In our daily life,we are always facing black mirrors. However, we can hardly see ourselves in aps sometimes we can, but only as a colourless face. Technology has broughtgreat convenience of communication for information but at the same time, it haswebbed our thought.
Several years ago, an article named “Is Google making us stupid” got quitepopular on the Internet. At that time, I thought it was just alarmism but now Ifind it much worse because technology is not just making us stupid but alsoweakening our independent thought. About half year ago, I was invited to judge adebate competition. When I arrived at the competition room, I noticed it was anold and classic topic, so I was expecting those players to give me some new andspecial ideas. Unfortunately, when the game continued, I found all theviewpoints and examples they used were totally the same as the previouscompetition. The only fun during the competition was to predict what they wouldsay. As far as I was concerned, they were not making a debate but replaying avideo. Obviously, they just spoke for the black mirror.
Debate was born as an area that we use our own thought to defend ouropinion. However due to high technology, all these "My opinion is" in thecompetition are actually "The opinion I have found is". That is , really, atragedy because all human dignity lies in thought which has been weakened byconvenient technology.
Truth to be told, debate is not the only example. In every field, we canget whatever information or opinions we want from the almighty black mirror. Asa consequence, how to restructure human thought has become not only importantbut also necessary in today's technologically advanced world. And the answer ishumanism which stands for human independent special mind. Just as humanism freedpeople's thought from the force of religion in the Renaissance, I'm waiting inthe hope that it can rescue the ideology trapped in high technology. Humanism isa Lodestar guiding us to the era that anyone can form their own opinion aboutanything but not just speak the words from the Internet.
Ladies and gentlemen, I'm not an anti-technologist but I do care aboutthose disadvantages that technology brings to our present life. With the laundrymachine, we don't know how to hand wash clothes clean. With electronic addressbooks, we can even hardly remember our girlfriends or boyfriends' phone now with a convenient way to get opinion, we seldom think with our own so, human is only a reed, the feeblest thing in nature. So follow the spiritof humanism, have an independent mind, so that we can be colorful in those blackmirrors.

There is no creativity without imagination. With the development of the society, creativity becomes more and more important. People could not satisfy with ordinary life. So we need creativity to meet their requirements. We can see significance of the creativity from an example. The smart phone—iphone spread all over the world. That was the creativity of The Apple Inc. It is obvious that it will produce a bigger profit than common manufacturing. But, hao can we acquire creativity?
没有想象力就没有创造力。随着社会的发展，创造力变得越来越重要。人们已经不能满足于日常生活。所以我们需要不断的创新来满足他们的需求。通过一个例子我们可以知道创造力的意义。苹果智能手机的使用遍及全世界。这就是苹果公司的创新。很显然，这项创新产生了巨大的利润比起普通的制造业。但是我们怎样才能获得创造力?
I think the creativity roots in imagination. Albert Einstein said that imagination is important than knowledge. Because we should creative a thing that is never appeared, we need to image. Use all the things and information around us to think and then go to achieve it. Without the imagination of the Wright brothers , human could not complete the flying dreams. Without the imagination of the Alexander Graham Bell, we could not hear the voice from a distance. If the creativity can make the human progress, imagination will be the road to success. Where the imagination come from? Knowledge ? Experience ? practice? I consider that all of them are indispensable. It is often said that knowledge is power. So we should empower ourselves with knowledge. After that we need to obtain experience form. practice. These are the basis, and we must strengthen them to extend our imagination.
我认为创造力扎根于想象力。爱因斯坦曾经说过，想象力远远比知识更重要。因为我们要创造一个事物，以前从没有出现过的，因此我们需要想象。利用我们周围所有的事物以及信息去想象，然后去完成它。 没有莱特兄弟的想象力，人类就不能实现飞天的梦想;没有贝尔的想象力，我们就不能听到来自远方的声音。如果说创造力可以使人进步，那么想象力就是通向成功的道路。想象力来自哪里?知识?经验?还是实践?我觉得所有这些都是必不可少的。俗语有云：知识就是力量。所以我们首先应该用知识武装自己，然后我们需要从实践中获得经验。这些都是基础，我们必须用它们来扩展我们的思维。
As contemporary college students, we must shoulder the responsibility of the future of our motherland. What we need is not only the knowledge of the past, but also is the innovation of a new field. Our thought can not be bound by the old things. We should understand that an excellent nation is always full of creativity. So we must promote our imagination. Someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of abook, whose pages are infinite”. I don’t know who wrote these words, but I’vealways liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it tobe. We are all in the position of the farmers. If we plant a good seed ,we reapa good harvest. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.
We are young. “How to spend the youth?” It is a meaningful question. Toanswer it, first I have to ask “what do you understand by the word youth?” Youthis not a time of life, it’s a state of mind. It’s not a matter of rosy cheeks,red lips or supple knees. It’s the matter of the will. It’s the freshneof thedeep spring of life.
A poet said “To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wildflower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. Severaldays ago, I had a chance to listen to a lecture. I learnt a lot there. I’d liketo share it with all of you. Let’s show our right palms. We can see three linesthat show how our er and life is. I have a short line of life.
What about yours? I wondered whether we could see our future in this , let’s make a fist. Where is our future?
Where is our love, career, and life? Tell , it is in our hands. Itis held in ourselves.
We all want the future to be better than the past. But the future can gobetter itself. Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. From thepast, we’ve learnt that the life is tough, but we are tougher. We’ve learnt thatwe can’t choose how we feel, but we can choose what about it. Failure doesn’tmean you don’t have it, it does mean you should do it in a different ure doesn’t mean you should give up, it does mean you must try harder.
As what I said at the beginning, “we are reading the first verse of thefirst chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. The past has gone. Nothingwe do will change it. But the future is in front of us. Believe that what wegive to the world, the world will give to us. And from today on, let’s be theowners of ourselves, and speak out “We are the world, we are the future.”

"Modern and advanced"? This society forgets, and ignores the other two thirds of human beings. It's far from the ideal! We call ideal as a utopian, a place where reality does not exist. A few people still look forward to the ideals. We make fun of them, considering they are naive. Will we still be content to live in such a society, if misfortune drops to us? No! Of cause not!
When we feel the warmth of the sun, these people, endure great sorrows and pains. Can we imagine that? They are our brother and sisters!
Facing them, will we still complain about our own misfortune?
Facing them, will we still have the mood shouting for our own freedom? Facing them, will we still want to have more and more unnecessary stuff?
They are unable to meet their needs, even the basic needs of survival! Everyone, as a member of humanity, shouldn't feel ashamed? Our luxury deprived their lives, our indifference violated our soul, and our barbarity destroyed human civilization!
What's the ideal society? It's a society no one worries about their living, a society no one is refused from education, a society everyone can pursue his/her own happiness! The ideal society is filled with love, joy and kindness. In that society, we can touch the other's hearts, we can share our dreams and most important, we can just be the true men!
Let's break the ethnic divide, bridge the gap between rich and poor, hand in hand, to build a Great wall, protecting us from evil; to construct a steady bridge, connecting reality to the ideal society! Let's pursue for that, that's the only way to the bright future! They are watching us! Thank you!
Smoking is a greater cause of death and disability than any single disease, says the World Health Organisation.
According to their figures, it is responsible for approximately five million deaths worldwide every year.
Tobacco smoking is a known or probable cause of approximately 25 diseases, and even the WHO says that its impact on world health is not fully assessed.
Heart attack and stroke
UK studies show that smokers in their 30s and 40s are five times more likely to have a heart attack than non-smokers.
Tobacco contributes to the hardening of the arteries, which can then become blocked and starve the heart of bloodflow, causing the attack.
Often, smokers who develop this will require complex and risky heart bypass surgery.
If you smoke for a lifetime, there is a 50% chance that your eventual death will be smoking-related - half of all these deaths will be in middle age.
Smoking also increases the risk of having a stroke.
Lung problems
Another primary health risk associated with smoking are lung cancer, which kills more than 20,000 people in the UK every year.
US studies have shown that men who smoke increase their chances of dying from the disease by more than 22 times.
Women who smoke increase this risk by nearly 12 times.
Lung cancer is a difficult cancer to treat - long term survival rates are poor.
Smoking also increases the risk of oral, uterine, liver, kidney, bladder, stomach, and cervical cancers, and leukaemia.
Another health problem associated with tobacco is emphysema, which, when combined with chronic bronchitis, produces chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
he lung damage which causes emphysema is irreversible, and makes it extremely difficult to breathe.
Harm to children
Smoking in pregnancy greatly increases the risk of miscarriage, is associated with lower birthweight babies, and inhibited child development.
Smoking by parents following the birth is linked to sudden infant death syndrome, or cot death, and higher rates of infant respiratory illness, such as bronchitis, colds, and pneumonia.
Nicotine, an ingredient of tobacco, is listed as an addictive substance by the US authorities.
Although the health risks of smoking are culmulative, giving up can yield health benefits regardless of the age of the patient, or the length of time they have been smoking.
By 20xx, the WHO expects the worldwide death toll to reach 10 million, causing 17.7% of all deaths in developed countries.
There are believed to be 1.1 billion smokers in the world, 800 million of them in developing countries.
