响沙湾在蒙语中被称为“布热芒哈”，意思是“带喇叭的沙丘”。它坐落在内蒙古达拉特旗境内库布其沙漠东端，北距草原钢城50公里，高大的沙丘呈月牙形状约有80多米高，横亘数公里，金黄色的沙坡掩映在蓝天白云下，有一种茫茫沙海入云天的壮丽景象，好似一条金黄色的卧龙。
响沙湾的沙漠面积约有1.6万平方公里，沙坡斜度约50°，其上没有任何的植被覆盖，从沙丘的顶部向下滑会响起“嗡嗡”之声。响沙湾的沙鸣奇迹至今仍是一个谜团，干百年来，人们解释不了响沙的成因，却赋予它许多美丽的传说。传说很早以前;这里是一座规模宏大的喇嘛庙，正当千余喇嘛聚众颂经，击鼓吹号时，突然狂风大作，倾刻间，将寺庙掩埋在沙漠之中，这声音，便是喇嘛们冤魂未散，至今仍在击鼓、吹号的声音.....传说固然美丽，但不能揭开响沙之迷。近年来学者提出了“地形说”、“共鸣箱原理”、“静电学说”来揭示它的成因，还有人认为，响沙湾沙丘之中的含金量较大，因此发出响声;也有人认为沙漠表面的沙子细且干燥是沙鸣的原因。
然而，没有哪种解释将响沙湾的谜团彻底解开。
