日月潭之美，在于它环湖皆山，重峦迭峰，郁郁苍苍;湖面广漠，程度如镜，潭水湛蓝;湖中有岛，水中有山;波光岚影;一年四序，晨昏景致，各有差异。在风和日丽的春天，翠山环抱，堤岸曲致，山川交映，变革多端，当晨曦初上时，万籁俱寂，湖水放射出雄壮的色彩，倏忽变易，隐秘莫测;每逢落日西下，日月潭畔霞四起，轻纱般的薄雾在湖面上飘扬盘旋;若遇细雨蒙蒙。附近山峦如同经地冲洗，显得分外清净，山光水色，更是碧绿得可爱;尤其是秋季的夜晚，明月照潭，清光满湖，碧波素月一路交相辉映，平安优雅，置身其间，如临瑶池。清人曾作霖曾用“山中有水水中山，山自凌空水自闲”的诗句来歌咏日月潭这“青山拥碧水，明潭抱绿珠”的瑰丽景观。游人常把它与西湖对比，毕竟谁美?着实，故国江山，那里不美!日月潭不只是两岸人的民自满，大陆同胞亦为它那“万山丛中突现明潭”的奇景而孤高。
日月潭湖中风物旖旎，景致如画。湖畔的山麓上还建有很多亭台楼阁，是抚玩湖光山色的极好场合。附近秀美的天然景色中隐瞒着寺庙古塔，更显得感触幽雅。个中最引人的是潭南青龙山麓的玄奘寺和潭北山腰的文武庙。山麓建有玄奘寺，供奉唐代高僧玄奘法师，寺中悬有“民族法师”匾额一方。寺前有一座白色柱子的门楼，画栋雕梁的楼顶，飞檐挑角，富有民族特色。寺中三楼有一小塔，供奉着玄奘法师的头顶灵骨。寺后的青龙山巅，几年前建了一座九层高塔，名曰“慈恩塔”。塔仿辽宋古塔式样，为八角宝塔，每层檐尾垂挂小钟，迎风叮看成响，登塔远眺，明潭风物，一清二楚。有人说，在天高云淡时，于塔顶可瞥见西子湖畔六和塔的塔尖，虽近似神话，却反应了人们对故国大陆的憧憬之情。
日月潭文武庙中间是孔子像，阁下是文昌帝群和关羽神像，庙中还祭奠神农大帝、岳王、玉皇大帝、元始天尊、三官大帝、城隍、海龙王等，可谓集神圣之大成，古刹构筑异常绮丽，从湖边山脚到庙门，共有陡峭石阶365级，有人戏称要走过“一年”才气达到，谓之“登天路”。
日月潭四面的德化社，是高山族聚居的村庄，现已建为山地文化村，山胞歌舞翩翩，尤以示意春米的“杵舞”吸引着浩瀚旅客。日月潭西边，是一座别致的孔雀园林，养稀有十对孔雀，每见艳装游人便竞相开屏，羽羽五光十色，色泽耀目，更添游人光致。
日月潭现在，环湖而游，至西北岸山脚，远远就可闻声水流咆哮如雷鸣，原本就是日月潭水源的入水口。这是从浊水溪上游通过18公里长的大地道引来的水，入水口喷出的水花，高达四五米至七八米，势若蛟龙吐水，湍激排空。使日月潭有了绵绵不断富裕的水源，此刻潭边修堤筑坝，湖面越发广漠，成为一个水力发电站的蓄水池。固然日月潭边低地被水沉没，月潭外形变得像一片枫叶，日月潭名称已名存实亡，但其水光山色依然布满诗情画意，不愧为两岸奇丽风光的突出代表。

他们跋山涉水，历尽艰险，终于来到阿里山下，找到了恶龙们害怕的金斧头和金剪刀。然后他们又回到大潭边，与恶龙恶战了一场，两条恶龙终于死了，可是太阳和月亮还是沉在潭里。大尖哥摘下公龙的眼珠，一口吞下肚;水花姐摘下母龙的眼珠，也一口吞下肚。他们变成了巨人，站在潭里像两座高山，大尖哥用劲把太阳抛起来，水花姐就拔起潭边的棕榈树向上托着太阳，把太功顶上天空。接着水花姐用劲把月亮抛上了天空，大尖哥也用棕榈树把月亮顶上天空。太阳和月亮又高挂在天上，光耀大地，万物复苏，人们欢呼雀跃。而大尖哥和水花姐从此变成了两座雄伟的大山，永远矗立在潭边。后来，人们就把这个大潭叫做日月潭，把这两座大山叫做大尖山和水花山。
